We have been lucky enough to receive a surprise, limited allocation of Glendronach's past batches of the very well received Cask Strength series.
Glendronach Batch #12 is back. This batch practically oozes christmas dessert and cherry liqueur. Perfect for rounding out the collection, before the next Batch is released. 58.2%
We found this batch to be much softer than the previous editions. What it lacks in punchiness, it makes up in a well integrated of Oloroso & PX cask influences, bringing the dark sweetness of PX and the more fruity brightness of Oloroso into lovely harmony.
Official Tasting Notes:
Nose: Rich mocha and creamy cappuccino meld with orange and raisin-filled fruit cake, cherry liqueur and sandalwood.
Palate: A voluptuous swathe of velvety spice reveals dark chocolate tiramisu topped with flamed Seville orange peel, toasted almond and crystallised ginger.
Finish: The lingering finale of amaretto-laced mocha, morello cherry and sultana on indulgent caramelised crème brûlée.
Founded in 1826 and in our view one of the top three 'sherry houses' (the others being Macallan and Glenfarclas), GlenDronach has enjoyed a period of supremacy amongst sherry-cask loving whisky fans. Its most recent period of closure - from 1996 to 2002 - has put a strain on mature stocks, meaning not only that they are released on strict allocations but their age statements often contain whisky older than what the label states.
