Who Run The Beer World? GIRLS

Who Run The Beer World? GIRLS

Good day fellow beer lovers!

Let us take a moment to reflect on the impact that women have had in the world across any disciplines; be that in the literary realm, art, music, politics, science and every other part of the human existence you can imagine. And in 2019, we see the celebration of inclusion, diversity and equality across the world in many different formats (hello, take last weekend’s Mardi Gras for inspiration).

Even with all the efforts going into creating a level of diversity amongst the brewing ranks, we are still experiencing an industry with an underrepresentation of females across leadership roles in Australian brewing around the 10%. However, the trend is moving upwards and the inspiration of the following women, their breweries and their beers to help elevate the future female beer lovers potentially into the next great brewer and brewery operators of Australia.

Two Birds Brewing

Easily the most visible, successful and influential female fronted brewery in Australia, Two Birds was formed of childhood friends Jayne Lewis and Danielle Allen and their love for beer. Their romanticism for brewing was formed on a two-week tour of the American west coast, where common ground was found for their appreciation for amazing food, wines and good times was cemented.

Since making the decision to launch Two Birds Brewing in 2011 and opening up strong with their iconic Golden Ale to be an indicator of the future success for the outfit.

Taco Ale

A favourite food for the world on Tuesdays for families fond of alliteration; staple of Californian food trucks and now, conveniently packaged into a refreshing as heck beer! Inspiration hit the girls 30,000 feet in the air, talking about their favourite foods and the idea was sparked to put the fresh, aromatic and nostalgic flavours of tacos.

Their inspiration materialised by taking a fresh, hop-forward ale and adding corn (to represent the traditional tortillas of Mexico) and pairing it with two of the most common additions to Mexican cuisine, coriander and lime to bring the fiesta to your face. An amazingly refreshing and unique brew, great to break the heat and intensity of the Australian summer!

Passion Victim

Canned Summer. That is what Jayne and Danielle were thinking when starting to work on a beer that would provide that feeling of the sun beating down on you while taking dips in and out of the most amazing beaches in the world. But the next question is, how does one take this feeling and put it into a brewed form?

Well, you make create a beer that is pale and hazy, to represent the barmy afternoons across the land, tropical it up with a three-pronged hop attack of Amarillo, galaxy and mosaic hops then supercharge that tropical vibe by adding in passionfruit puree. You get that great bitter hit, slightly tart notes from the passionfruit and a great lengthy from intelligent malt integration creates that summery feeling you can access every single day.

Modus Operandi

NEW MODUS CANS AVAILABLE NOW HERE

Life changing pilgrimages of Australian brewing icons seem to always land those individuals on their respective missions going the craft beer motherland, AMERICA. But not only did co-owners Jaz (A Badass Woman involved in the Beer industry!) and Grant Wearin spend months travelling throughout America, offering their services to breweries for free in return for being able to learn about all things beer, they even came home with one, brewerDJ McCready who was happy to start his new life on Sydney’s northern beaches. Jaz, Grant and DJ have seen saw amazing success as a brewery early on, and just three months into their existence in 2014 they picked up a slew of awards from the CBIA (Craft Beer Industry Association) and they have continued to put out some amazing limited run beers and along with having recently (like in the last week) have listened to all of us beer lovers and have released their amazing beers in a 375ml cans. All of which are going to be available in store and online FRIDAY.

Former Tenant Red IPA

One of the crowning jewels in the Modus arsenal, The Former Tenant is their amazing tribute to a former inhabitant of the space that was caught growing something the cops did not appreciate. This Red IPA is a marvel of balance with an aggressively forward hop interplay of Mosaic and Galaxy built in with a generous helping of dark malts to bring that slightly roasted characteristic that demonstrates how this was awarded a gold for dark/amber ales in the first few months of Modus being open.

Wippa Snippa Session Ale

For their first journey into the (almost) mid-strength world, Modus deliver on what their brewery motto has always been, BEER FIRST. When deciding to craft a beer of a moderate level of alcohol, Modus went down the path of packing as much flavour into this sessionable little number, bringing a lot of hope influence and a slight hint of tropical goodness with a clean, crisp and fun finish that leaves every sip needing another one. When drinking responsibly and you don’t want to lose out on the flavour side, line on up for this tasty number.

Sonic Prayer IPA

Another one of Modus’ “storming the castle” beers that hit massive acclaim early onto let everyone know they were here to shake things up, Sonic Prayer is best thought of Dennis’ ode to seminal American psychedelic rockers Earthless. Sonic Prayer bridges the worlds between American and English IPAs, taking a strong German and English malt to build the foundation for a smashing of kiwi and American hops pre-ferment, and then a raining down of more American and some Australian hops right at the end of it all. You will see citrus, passionfruit, pineapple and peach being met with piney bitterness and a malty finish. Prepare to have your prayers answered.
