It’s always exciting news when we’ve managed to get our hands on a couple of rare bottles from one of our favourite cognac houses, but it’s even more exciting when we’re able to offer them at great prices.

Much smaller than the household names of the famous cognac region, the historic Hine maison has long punched above its weight in terms of quality and value. Their classic H By Hine and Rare VSOP bottles are bolted-on staples of our spirits shelf and now we have a couple of bottlings from the upper echelon to offer as well.

Thomas Hine was an Englishman who came to France in 1791 in search of business opportunities, but he was almost immediately imprisoned under suspicion of being a spy during those years of revolution. Following that ordeal he married a local girl, Francoise Elisabeth, and took a job with her father’s cognac business, which had begun in 1763.

With the business expanding and their reputation for quality and sourcing from top crus growing, Hine took over the business in 1817 and renamed it after himself. Hine died in 1822, with his family members continuing the inheritance.

Fittingly for the English roots, in 1962 Hine was awarded a royal warrant by Queen Elizabeth II and it remains the sole official cognac supplier to the British monarchy. Today the business is run by sixth generation Bernard Hine.

This 1990 Millesime is complex and layered, floral and delicate initially but with plenty of power for those who give it the time. One for real cognac lovers, we’ve seen this regularly go for between 300-400 Euro ($480-$640 AUD) in Europe during recent months.

Considered the pinnacle of the Hine house, blended from over 50 cognacs. Incredibly silky, with integrated vanilla and oak amongst rich grape fruits. You can pay well over $600 (if you can find it) for this juice in the grand decanter, but we’ve one standard-shaped bottle sans box to offer at a very good price. Excellent chance to drink this exceptional cognac, rather than be scared to open one.
