German Smoked Beers

Citizens,

Smoked beer (German: Rauchbier) is a type of beer with a distinctive smoke flavour imparted by using maltedbarley dried over an open flame. The Rauchbiers of Bamberg in Germany, Schlenkerlain particular, are the best-known of the smoked beers in the world.

In the middle of the old part of Bamberg, directly beneath the mighty cathedral, one can find the historic smoked beer brewery Schlenkerla. First mentioned as "House of the blue lion" in 1405, the Schlenkerla is today run by the Trum family in the 6th generation and is the fountain of Original Schlenkerla Smokebeer (in German language it's called "Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier").

AECHT SCHLENKERLA RAUCHBIER URBOCK 500ML

A full bodied smoked bock beer for Bamberg's strong beer season (October through December) in fall. Brewed already in the summer time, it is matured for months in the ancient Schlenkerla rock-cellars underneath Bamberg. Similar to, but much bigger than the classic Maerzen style.

AECHT SCHLENKERLA RAUCHBIER MARZEN 500ML

Marzen is considered the classic example in its category, has been brewed for centuries in the baroque town of Bamberg in Franconia (Bavaria/Germany). Following the most ancient malting traditions, all its select barley malts are kilned over a fire of beech wood logs at the Schlenkerla maltings. Brewed in classic copper vessels and matured for months in 14th century cellars, Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier is a truly unique smoky beer experience.

AECHT SCHLENKERLA EICHE DOPPELBOCK 500ML

While for the classic "Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier" traditionally beech has been - and still is - used, the malt for "Schlenkerla Oak Smoke" is kilned with Oak wood. The resulting Schlenkerla Oak Smoke Malt has a smoother and more multi layered smoky note than the intensely aromatic Beech Smoke Malt.

AECHT SCHLENKERLA RAUCHBIER WEIZEN 500ML

Schlenkerla Smokebeer Wheat is an ale with light smoky aroma. As Bavarian wheat beers, it is being brewed with a mixture of both barley malt and wheat malt. The portion of barley malt is hereby a classic Schlenkerla smokemalt, while the wheat malt remains unsmoked.
