The Giuseppe Mascarello family has over 150 years of winemaking experience and makes the iconic Barolo cru using the original methodology. Before taking on their first vineyard in 1881, the family ran the Manescotto estate in the village of La Morra in Northern Italy for the French Roman Catholic philanthropist Giulia Colbert Faletti di Barolo. Now the Mascarello family property extends over 15 hectares of vineyards, all located within the Barolo wine-growing area in north-west Italy. The grapes from each single vineyard are vinified separately, to ensure the highest quality wines and retain the unique qualities of the grapes from vineyard to vineyard. The name of the vineyard and the location of the nearest village are given on the label of each wine. The family now fully owns one of the most prestigious cru in Barolo after many years of purchasing plot after plot they have acquired all of Monprivato. Situated in the town of Castiglione Falletto this single vineyard is beautifully situated facing southwest, with the unique and exquisite terroir creating a wine that stands alone in a heavily competitive landscape. When it comes to winemaking, Mauro is often described as ‘an enlightened traditionalist’ eschewing French oak barrels and roto-fermenters. Now assisted by his son Giuseppe, the wines are matured in 1950s Slavonian oak casks for around 30 months followed by six years in bottle. Giuseppe Mascarello & Figlio unquestionably lead the way in terms of excellence, it is no exaggeration to describe them as some of the greatest wine producers in the world.
