The brewery was founded in Kumihama township in the Kyotango region of Kyoto Prefecture in 1842, where they have made sake ever since.
The brand name, Tamagawa, can be translated as “Jewel River”, and is thought to derive from the Kawakamidani River which flows by the brewery.
The character 川 (kawa or gawa in compound words) is an ideogram showing the flow of a river, which is what it means. Tama (玉) means an orb or a jewel, and by extension expresses the idea of precious beauty.
It is thought that the name reflects the reverence in which our ancestors held rivers and water in the Shinto tradition.

Tamagawa Brewery is also the only brewery in Japan to have a Master Brewer who is not Japanese.

Tamagawa Junmai Kimoto Time Machine 1712 is a sake made using a 200yr old recipe from back in the Edo Period (1603-1868).

Although this sake is super sweet, it is 5-7 times more amino acid magic than found in modern Ginjo-Type sake. This is Japanese sake take on dessert wine, ideal for both pre- and post-dinner drinks. It is a well-blended mixture of flavours from sweetened honey and lemons to the umami, soy sauce, and musky notes.

Enjoy this sake with vanilla and/or matcha ice-cream, bitter chocolate or any Western confectionery.
