The Old Pulteney 17-Year-Old, discontinued in 2017, was once regarded as one of the best core range whiskies on the market. Rated highly by Jim Murray and those who loved the distillery alike, this incredible bottling struck the perfect balance between the distillery’s signature, maritime spirit, and a pleasant, more heavily aged expression.
The spirit is predominantly ex-Bourbon cask, with some sherry cask stock thrown in for good measure, making for a whisky rich with soft fruits, butterscotch, salty sea air and subtle, dried oak spice notes.
Founded in 1826 in Wick, on the country’s north east coast, Pulteney’s character and story is informed and inspired by its location. A fishing town whose fortunes rise and fall with the ocean, the Pulteney’s flavour and presentation has long been associated with the seaside. For a long time it was the most northerly distillery on the mainland, a title that the reincarnation of Wolfburn in Thurso now holds. It’s still up for debate just how much impact sea air pounding onto a warehouse fill of barrels has, but two things we can be sure of is that Wick is windy and the single malt that comes from Pulteney has a background, but discernible, coastal, salty note.
