Loch Gorm is the name given to Kilchoman annual sherry matured limited edition. Named after Islay’s largest freshwater loch neighboring the distillery, the dark murky colour of the loch’s water is reflected in the rich coppery tones of their sherry matured Loch Gorm release.
Loch Gorm is exclusively matured in oloroso sherry casks from the renowned bodega, Jose Miguel Martin. It is common for distilleries to use a variety of sherry producers but for their consistent quality and character, it is vital that they source them all from just one bodega. They select a combination of sherry butts and hogsheads from Jose Miguel Martin that provides two separate styles of maturation.
This is one of our favourite yearly releases! As time goes on the level to which Kilchoman has both peated and aged their spirt increasing. The 2024 batch of Loch Gorm was perhaps a few months short of bearing a 10 Year Old age statement, with all of its stock being distilled during or before 2014. 23 Casks, 17 fresh fill sherry with 6 refill, this batch is perhaps more meaty than previous years, reminding me of the 2020 bottling.
Tasting Notes:
Nose: Waves of sweet BBQ smoke and cooked fruits with dark chocolte and dried figs
Taste: Delicate peat smoke combined with honey roasted nuts, cinnamon and malted barley
Finish: Fresh notes of citrus and rich toffee
Founded in 2005, Kilchoman was the first new distillery to be built on Islay in over 124 years. Anthony Wills, Kilchoman Founder, set out to resurrect the grass roots tradition of farm distilling. Since then, they have become a well renowned distillery.
