Exclusive to The Oak Barrel in Australia, a 2010 vintage Caol Ila from Italian bottlers Wilson & Morgan matured in ex-bourbon and virgin oak casks.
This comes under the "Quercus Alba" (the Latin name for American oak) label of W&M's Barrel Selection series, which is the search of the perfect balance between ex-Bourbon casks and Virgin Oak. This release has a bigger emphasis on second fill barrels.
It’s the perfect marriage of two very different styles of maturation, fully retaining the character of the spirit and adding subtle layers of complexity.
The result is fully Islay, with all the salty, tarry and smoky notes that are expected from this coastal distillery, and at the same time a slightly fuller body, a trace of sweetness, a peppery undercurrent. It’s certainly a tad more muscular than the traditional distillery style, but without masking its inherent freshness.
Development in the glass brings a slightly earthy tone, a quizzical leathery quality, a touch of liquorice too.
Distilled 2010 and bottled 2021 at 46% from casks #323386-323392.
Wilson & Morgan dates back to wine and oil merchant Giuseppe Rossi, the grandfather of current chairman Fabio Rossi. The business expanded to Scotch whisky in the 1960s and then premium blends, direct from the distilleries in the 70s. Pushing into single malts in the 80s under the banner 'King Of Whiskies', Fabio launched the Wilson & Morgan Barrel Selection label in 1992.
