This Caol Ila was distilled in 2007 and bottled in 2021 as a 13-year-old by Taiwanese independent bottler, The Whisky Age. Refill hogshead #320323 yielded 289 bottles at a natural cask strength of 57.4% abv.

Official Tasting Notes:

Nose: Delicate salty seabreeze and smoke. Sweet lemon citrus, creamy, nutty and ashy.

Palate: Mellow and sweet. Soft and savoury, gentle peat, lemon peel and some black pepper. Another truly perfect Caol Ila.

Caol Ila was founded in 1846 on Islay's East coast, next to Port Askaig. The distillery was demolished by current owner, Diageo, in 1972 and rebuilt with a massively increased capacity; making it the largest producer of single malt whisky on Islay. Despite receiving the same spec of malt, from Port Ellen Maltings, as Lagavulin, Caol Ila's distillation regime produces a lighter, less phenolic spirit. Their spirit is described as coastal, gently smoky, grassy, floral and fruity.

The Whisky Age is a Taiwanese independent bottler, which was founded, in a nascent form, in 2014 by Rex Weng. Initially the group sold whisky gelato, however, the company has evolved since then to become a thriving (albeit small) independent bottler. In 2018 they began bottling whisky under the label The Whisky Blues and in 2021 they began releasing whisky under the self-named label, The Whisky Age. These whiskies are brought into Australia by the team behind one of The Oak Barrel's favourite Melbourne bars, The Elysian Whisky Bar.
