The very first single cask released by Melbourne's The Gospel Rye, cask #35 has been bottled at 48% and is limited to just 328 bottles.
A single cask that we loved when it came across our desks, the only issue with this one was that we had to share it with other states. Double distilled from 100% Mallee rye, this was aged for over two years in heavily toasted virgin American oak casks.
A rich a full flavoured expression, this is bottled at the optimum ABV for our palates - the classic dry rye spice is mixed in with cinnamon and allspice notes, enveloped in mouth-coating vanilla. The nose is big, but repeat passes show the compexity - the sweeter spice emerging hand-in-hand with the oak.
From the distillery themselves, "This single cask release is a result of our endless pursuit for a bold, distinct, yet perfectly balanced whiskey. We continuously comb through our barrel catalogue of hundreds of casks sampling each one individually to select a 15-barrel blend that becomes our Straight Rye Whiskey.
Occasionally we discover a barrel that is so exceptional that it needs to stand alone as an example of perfection in its own right. This is Cask #35."
In his recent pre-lockdown visit, world-renowned whisky authority Dave Broom gave the cask 4.5 stars out of five, commenting, "it has an immediate ridiculous confidence to it – but not in an aggressive way… A real discovery.”
Based in Melbourne, The Gospel rye whisky has emerged from the Melbourne Moonshine operation. From their underage solera release to their very first rye whisky earlier in 2020, this inaugural single cask showcases the quality and characteristics of their at once traditional, but also quintessentially Australian, creation.
