A stunning sherry-cask finished 40-year-old whisky from Talisker on the Isle Of Skye.
This is the first in the Bodega series, which will showcase the distillery’s smoky, maritime aromas interacting with sherry casks. The inspiration comes from the style of whiskies the remote distillery was producing in the 1800s and early 1900s.
In this case, the whisky – bottled at 50% - has been matured in refill American oak casks and then finished in 40-year-old ex-amontillado sherry casks. The casks were sourced from Bodega Delgado Zuleta.
This 40-year-old is the oldest official release from Talisker that has been made available to the public. A 41-year-old private cask was sold to the Asian market previously, but it was not made available for public purchase. There are just 2,000 bottles worldwide of this 40-year-old.
Talisker’s Global Brand Ambassador Donald Colville says of the release, “It is a magnificent lion-hearted old Talisker, rich with the sophistication of age yet still full of life and retaining the make's familiar maritime and spicy character.
“This Talisker 40-Year-Old, is an exquisite single malt Scotch whisky which captures the age-old relationships with Delgado Zuleta and the high quality craftsmanship which took place throughout the creation of this rare expression.â€
Talking to ScotchWhisky.com he added, “‘Throughout the ledgers and archives we have, we go back to the early 1900s and see the different types of Sherry casks used at Talisker to mature the whisky, and Delgado was being used as a key supplier of casks to the distillery.
“The 1978 vintage pays homage to reimagining the flavours that were potentially being enjoyed back then. It’s a wonderful addition to the range.â€
Founded in 1830 on the Isle Of Skye by the MacAskill brothers Hugh and Kenneth, Talisker is a distillery steeped in history and fanatical fans.
