Corymbia is a young label with a wealth of history, experience and talent behind it – and a massive future ahead.
The Mann family name is synonymous with the Swan Valley, one of Australia's oldest regions that is undergoing a revival - with Rob and Gen Mann of Corymbia leading the charge.
Rob's grandfather Jack Mann was the creator of the Chenin Blanc-based staple Houghton White Burgundy, and became one of WA's most celebrated winemakers following 51 straight vintages with the Houghton. Rob himself was one of the crop of hotshots at Hardys during the reign of Stephen Pannell, before Rob was anointed Pannell’s successor as chief at Hardys Tintara. From there he established a name for himself as one of the great talents of his generation during his time at the helm of Cape Mentelle in Margaret River. Genevieve, meanwhile, worked in South Africa, France, California and South Australia prior to moving to Margaret River in 2007 in the role of head winemaker for Howard Park.
The two of them kicked off their own dream, Corymbia, with the 2013 vintage. From their dry-grown, organic-farmed Swan Valley vineyard, the produce a cracking Chenin and a deliciously layered red blend of Tempranillo, Malbec and Cabernet
What we'll be trying
2019 Corymbia Chenin Blanc
It's gently spiced with pepper and cinnamon quills. It's floral with some fresh herbs, poached apple, bees wax and refreshing lemon barley water flavours. The palate is altogether racier, almost Riesling-like acidity keeping this long and pure with the right amount of phenolics adding that extra layer.' - 95 points. James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion
2018 Corymbia Tempranillo/Malbec Cabernet
'Highly perfumed, pretty almost floral scents, violets come to mind, whiffs of blueberry/mulberry, green olive, a touch of clove woody spice, sarsaparilla and anise. Just lovely. Medium weight, sinewy feel, succulent and beautiful, fine web of clove-licked tannins, great energy here, bright and lengthy, fine, tight finish here. Has a ‘serious’ feel but also deliciousness.' - 95 points. Mike Bennie, The Wine Front
How the tasting will work
Each ticket includes 1 bottle each of these wines. Tickets will be sold for $77, $69.30 for Oak Barrel members, including delivery to your door. (the wines in store retail for $80 so that's a pretty good deal on it's own!)
We’ll be sending out those packs from Friday 14 August, to ensure that we can get them everywhere they need to be.
Then on Thursday 20 August we’ll go live with Corymbia's Rob Mann, Cellarhand's Ed Merrison and Harry Seville, and the Oak Barrel's Joe Perry to discuss these wines and all thing Swan Valley
That will be live streamed through Zoom and The Oak Barrel’s Facebook and Youtube page as we field your comments and questions from around Australia.
We recommend between 90-120ml pours for the tasting event, so you’ll have plenty of wine left over after the night.
The live stream video will be posted after the live event concludes - so you can do the tasting at your leisure. But if you want to follow along live, we recommend ordering by Friday 14 August.
