Rich-yet-soft, fulfilling-yet-approachable the Two-Fold Double Grain from Melbourne’s Starward.
Launched October 2018, this is distilled from wheat and malted barley, two grains that flourish in Australia. Matured in wine casks in the dynamic Melbourne climate, this is full of vanillas, rich fruits soft spices.
Incredible value for an Australian whisky, and one destined to introduce the world to Australian whisky. A whisky for all occasions and one to be shared.
The malt component is distilled at Starward, while the wheat component comes from New South Wales’ Manildra site.
The Oak Barrel’s 2018 Whisky Of The Year.
Tasting notes, sample opened for a month: It’s not disguised at all on the nose, the ripe banana and tropical fruits of Starward are prominent here, a bit of lifted grain and fresh-cut red apple. Yellow jelly-babies, dry grass cuttings. Palate is exceptionally soft, thanks wheat, red confectionary sweetness on the palate, slightly biscuity towards a gentle spice on the finish that lingers with tropical fruits again.
