Wednesday 25th June 6pm | Sake 101Â | Introduction to Sake | In-store
Your sake journey starts here…
Returning to The Oak Barrel for the first time in 2025, Sake 101 is back! Hosted by Thomas Hart – NSW Sake Sommelier Educator.
Directed towards those new to sake and those who are already familiar but looking to refresh their knowledge, this short 2-hour session will familiarise attendees with the essential styles, key terminology, and basic production processes of sake, with examples of different sake and sake serves provided along the way.
By the end of the session, you should be equipped with enough knowledge to begin researching, ordering, and appreciating sake and will be confidently progressing along your personal sake journey.
If this is your first time joining us for a Sake event, you are in for a treat! We will be tasting a range of different sakes, exposing you to a broad spectrum of different flavours & styles.
What’s on pour:
8+ Sake from:
- Azumacho (Seto Brewing Company, Saga Prefecture, Kyushu)
- Ichinoide (Kuge Honten, Oita Prefecture, Kyushu)
- Kuncho (Kunchou Shuzo, Oita Prefecture, Kyushu)
What’s On Offer:
As always with Sake 101, we’ll be going through the sake classification system and exploring its core production process, with a mind to use this framework as a tool to understand the most common styles of sake. We will also briefly touch upon namazake, the traditional ferments, and some alternative styles.
In contrast to previous sessions, we’ll also group our sake by the predominant flavour profiles (as opposed to their legal classifications), experiment with variations in temperature and serving vessel, and have plenty of time to field questions at chat pairings at the end. All in all, the focus for this session will be more about exploring the audience’s curiosity without getting too bogged down in the technical details.
Across the session, six sakes will be tasted, with the full lineup to be announced closer to the date.
By the end of the session, you will be able to:
- Read the back of a sake bottle’s label.
- Confidently order in a bar, restaurant, or bottle shop.
- Know what to look for when shopping online.
- Appreciate the differences between ginjo, junmai, daiginjo, and honjozo; namazake; traditional ferments; and alternative styles.
- Answer the questions: “What is sake, how is it made, and why is it unique?”
Complementary snacks will be available for all guests. If you have any dietary requirements, please email team@oakbarrel.com.au before Monday, 23rd June, to arrange alternatives.
See you there!
