The 2022 release – the 12th in total – of Kilchoman’s 100% Islay release, where everything is done on the island – from growing the barley to bottling.
This was distilled from the 2011, 2012 and 2013 barley harvests before being matured in 29 bourbon barrels and 6 oloroso sherry butts for a minimum of eight years.
The barley variety used for this release was Publican, it was floor malted on site and peated to 20PPM (parts per millions), which is lower than their standard 50PPM, in order to let the malt shine.
12,500 bottles worldwide.
Official Tasting Notes:
Nose: Elegant, sweet peat smoke, followed by waves of citrus and honey, finishing with notes of vanilla and salted caramel.
Palate: A Bourbon-driven 100% Islay brings an initial malt-driven profile followed by green fruits; apple and pear. Light spice, raisin and toffee are present towards the finish.
Finish: Peat smoke returns and remains on the palate. The oily texture of this 100% Islay allows for a creamy profile balanced with toffee and caramelised sugar.
Founded in 2005, Kilchoman was the first new distillery to be built on Islay in over 124 years. Anthony Wills, Kilchoman Founder, set out to resurrect the grass roots tradition of farm distilling.
