“Nearly impenetrable inky ruby color. Deep, brooding aromas of black cherry, violet, tar, shoe polish and botanical herbs. Sweet/sour flavors of black cherry, blueberry juicy, minerals and ink are complicated by a dusting of botanical herbs. This multilayered knockout of a wine finishes very bright and long, with repeating floral lift. Very clean and precise, and devoid of any funky animal aromas or flavors, it’s one of the best red wines from Pepe in years and a testament to the potential greatness of the Montepulciano grape. 96pts.”

“The 2007 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Vecchie Vigne is quite closed in the glass, only showing dusty rose, dried cherries, violets and brown spice nuances. On the palate is where it truly impresses. Vibrant acidity enlivens masses of red berries and inner florals, while silky textures give way to a staining of mineral intensity. Dried citrus and adolescent tannins linger long under an air of autumn leaves and undergrowth, which is the only sign of the 2007’s maturity, yet the endnote here is fresh. Since the aromatics evolve at a snail’s pace, make sure to give this a good decanting before jumping in. That said, it’s an incredibly pretty wine. Drinking Window: 2022-2035. 95pts.”
