I have a soft spot for Tullibardine, but sadly, I do think the standard range really hasn’t set the world on fire lately. Such a shame.
So, it is with some pleasure seeing a Cadenhead bottling again. And for this edition, that most exotic, as well as highly expensive, of sherry style, Palo Cortado.
And, what is Palo Cortado? Basically it is a failed Fino. The resulting wine is then fortified and aged as an Oloroso. The beauty of this style, is that the tang and freshness of the Fino remains along with the richness and intrigue of the Oloroso.
From DramFace, “Light mouthfeel. It is oak driven, but Tullibardine isn’t exactly known to be the most characterful of distillates. Quality vanilla, sherry spices – which taste quite European oak-y to me – and those roasted hazelnuts from the nose. In my humble opinion, finding a tasty Tullibardine is not that easy a task. That’s why I applaud Cadenhead’s for this release. It is bottled at the right strength, and the Palo Cortado cask injects just enough complexity to make it interesting”.
Official notes read, ” Dark chocolate, Maraschino cherries. dried apricot & dried mango. Coffee, salted caramel truffles, nutmeg, chalky.”
The Cadenhead’s Original Collection is a newer range from the Cadenhead’s shop, aimed at the export market. If every Cadenhead release was released in their own shops in the UK, then none would be left for the rest of the world! To satiate this growing global demand, The Original Collection was born. Excellent releases, at 46%, usually from larger casks (hogsheads, hurrah!), with that everlasting Cadenhead’s quality.
Cadenhead is Scotland’s oldest independent bottler, having being founded in 1842 as William Cadenhead Limited Wine & Spirit Merchants. It was family owned until it was bought by another family company J&A Mitchell & Co, owners of the Springbank and Glengyle distilleries.
