Another new distillery for Boutique-y, Overeem is a distillery that has plenty of history. Between bouncing ownership, and changing locations, they have, for the moment, found a level of stability, and are making some rather high quality spirit!
On the Label…
“So, although we already had an Overeem label, with all that history, and a new beginning, we thought it deserved a revamp. Some of you Star Wars geeks will probably spot that this is a spoof of the Star Wars ‘A New Hope’ poster…
Deadly animal: Jack Jumper Ant. A species of venomous ant native to Australia. Most frequently found in Tasmania and southeast mainland Australia.”
Official Tasting Notes:
Nose: Rich dark chocolate, dried fruits, plums and raisins, with notes of hazelnuts, nutmeg and cinnamon, and just a hint of mint coming through the chocolate.
Palate: Viscous, bold, and incredibly well balanced. Dark chocolate leads hazelnuts and raisins, followed by peppery spices. Which linger long into the deliciously spicy finish.
That Boutique-y Whisky Company, now 10 years old, have bottled spirits from most distilleries in Scotland and are increasingly expanding to include whiskies, rums, brandies and more from around the world. Their limited edition labels reference interesting elements (or in-jokes) about the distilleries they celebrate. Boutique-y bottle their batches, which can be single cask or a number of casks, at the strength they deem the whisky is most enjoyable at.
Overeem distillery was the fourth modern Australian distillery; it was founded by Casey Overeem in 2007. In 2020 ownership of the brand returned to the Overeem family and it is now driven by Casey’s daughter Jane Overeem and husband Mark Sawford. That also coincided with a significant price reduction.
