The Oak Barrel is excited to announce our next virtual wine tasting! In an effort to promote social distancing, we're bringing the Oak Barrel tasting experience to a virtual space.
Our next installment will focus on the the Mornington Peninsula wines of Onannon.
Onannon is three friends - young superstars of the Aussie wine scene, in fact - with a single vision. A venture born back in 2008, Onannon's band of brothers comprises Mount Mary custodian Sam Middleton, Kaspar Hermann of Toolangi, and Stonier winemaker Will Byron. Their friendship forged in winemaking studies was cemented in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with each of them serving stints at Coldstream Hills in the Yarra Valley in the noughties.
Onannon's goal is to produce unpretentiously delicious wine that speaks a little of their personalities and a lot of the place where the grapes grow. Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir are the varieties and Mornington Peninsula is the focus, with Gippsland a neat juxtaposition over the years.
Will Byron was a finalist for Gourmet Traveller WINE Winemaker of the Year in 2019. As well as making Onannon a firm people's favourite, he's also driven the wines of Stonier forward, and carries with him wisdom gleaned from vintages with Maude (Central Otago), Brokenwood (Hunter Valley/Beechworth), Thomas (Hunter Valley) and both Domaine David Duband and Domaine Blain-Gagnard in Burgundy.
We are incredibly excited to announce our virtual wine tasting with Onannon's Will Byron, tasting and discussing all things Onannon, Mornington Peninsula, and beyond.
What We’ll Be Trying
Onannon Pinot Gris 2019
Onannon Pinot Noir 2018
How The Tasting Will Work
Each ticket includes 1 bottle each of these wines. Tickets will be sold for $75, $67.50 for Oak Barrel members, including delivery to your door.
We’ll be sending out those packs from Thursday 12 November, to ensure that we can get them everywhere they need to be.
Then on Wednesday 18 November we’ll go live with Onannon's Will Byron, Cellarhand's Ed Merrison and Harry Seville, and The Oak Barrel's Joe Perry.
That will be live streamed through Zoom and The Oak Barrel’s Facebook and Youtube page as we field your comments and questions from around Australia.
We recommend between 90-120ml pours for the tasting event, so you’ll have plenty of wine left over after the night.
The live stream video will be posted after the live event concludes - so you can do the tasting at your leisure. But if you want to follow along live, we recommend ordering by Thursday 12 November
