Part of the 2021 Diageo Special Releases; a cask strength 12-year-old Oban matured in freshly charred American oak casks and bottled at 56.2% abv.

The annual Diageo Special Releases have been a hotly anticipated part of the whisky calendar for the past 20 years. The series sees Diageo take full advantage of the dozens of Scotch whisky distilleries in their portfolio. The Special Releases series sees Diageo showcase rare, ghosted and workhorse distilleries, such as Brora, Royal Lochnagar, Teaninich and Benrinnes, that are otherwise never seen as single malt expressions. It also allows for experimentation with the maturation and delivery of some of their classic malts, such as Cragganmore, Lagavulin and Talisker.

For this year, each of the eight whiskies in the collection express an individual character, inspired by mythical Scottish creatures that, according to legend, inhabit the lands surrounding the distilleries. This is brought to life with stunning bottle art, that was designed by renowned, Australian, digital illustrator Ken Taylor.

Offical Tasting Notes

Nose: Elusive yet maritime, suggesting edible seaweed and crystal salt, with coarse black pepper, on lightly smoked fillets of white fish. After a while sweet chilli sauce is added while water brings up light olive oil.

Palate: Very smooth and soft, with a lightly citrus-sweet taste, balanced by salt amid-palate and insistent spiciness from the freshly charred casks. Sweet, lush and vigorous, with a great balance between crunchy wood spice and fresh, fruity distillery character. A dash of water elevates the fruitiness.

Finish: Quite long, finishing spicy with a shkae of pepper. Water lengthens the smooth aftertaste.

Oban is a coastal distillery that is almost as old as the town in which it resides and with which it shares a name: records show that whisky has been produced here since as least 1799. Small, onion shaped stills and the use of worm-tub condensers, such as those utilised by Oban, usually means a heavy, meaty new make, however, Oban's spirit is the exact opposite. By running their condensers hot and opening the doors of the stills after distillation to allow the copper to be rejuvenated by oxygen, Oban is able to achieve a clean and fruity spirit.
