The Oak Barrel is excited to announce a whisky tasting wit a line-up we've never seen before - after digging through the archive during lockdown we've put together a selection of exclusive bottlings from the past six years.
Although it's not an exhaustive collection of everything we've bottled, these are a collection of our favourites from the period we'd like to open and share. It also gives us an opportunity to (finally) share in person our two 65th anniversary releases that we were forced to launch virtually in recent months.
Featuring single casks and releases from GlenDronach, Overeem, Archie Rose, Sullivans Cove, Paul John, Starward, Ardnamurchan and Black Gate, we are offering both in-store and virtual tickets, with the latter being sent drink-at-home packs to watch a broadcast of the event.
The event will also serve to introduce Josh Fischer to the audience, with Josh becoming the next Whisky & Spirits Educator for The Oak Barrel. He will co-host with incumbent Scott Fitzsimons, who will be moving on from the role following this tasting.
We will be adhering to strict social distancing and Covid-19 safety measures and working to a reduced capacity in our tasting room.
For the in-store option, this is a ticketed, sit-down event and as such you will need to provide proof of Covid-19 double vaccination for entry.
What We’ll Be Tasting
GlenDronach 2003 12-Year-Old Single Cask #3492 53.8%
Released 2015. The first GlenDronach single cask bottled for Australia, an oloroso sherry puncheon released in collaboration with NZ's WHisky Galore.
Starward 'Reverse Double' 48.5%
Released 2015. The second in the Oak Barrel's 'Startward Trilogy' and a reverse of the Double Wood expression, Reverse Double was red wine into apera cask. Any early example of the distillery's upcoming experimentation.
Paul John Single Cask #987 57.7%
Released 2016. We went hunting for a peated expression but decided upon this release instead, the first Australian single cask from the Indian distillery and one we kept coming back to.
Overeem OBWF-2017 (HD-110) Port Cask Strength 60%
Released 2017. With just 120 bottles in the run this was a powerful, textural whisky from the original distillery and distilled on or about 6 May 2011.
Released 2019. A collaborative release of just 32 bottles to mark 10 years of Whisky Fair and 10 years of the distillery, drawn from their port cask solera vat. (This is bottled in 500ml bottles, so will be samples of 10mls).
Archie Rose Rye Malt Single R125 Cask R125 54.2%
Released 2020. A shining light in an otherwise tough year, a barrel selected by Master Distiller Dave Withers and a single cask of their rye malt the year the rye malt was named World's Best Rye.
Released 2021. A gorgeous release from a team we've had a long and healthy whisky relationship with. One of the first Ardnamurchan single casks released anywhere in the world.
Released 2021. Finally we'll be able to share this in person, a whisky seven years in development following our previous Sullivans Cove exclusive release in 2014.
Samples in-store and virtually are 15ml, the OAKBARRELXBLACKGATE19 sample is 7ml.

THE OAK BARREL’S 2021 WHISKY TASTING SEASON
In 2021 The Oak Barrel will once again host a series of intimate, enjoyable and wide-ranging whisky tastings, but now they’ll be over a few different formats.
Our in-person tastings will return to our Cellar Room, which will now be capped to 20. This will not only ensure the safety of customers and staff, but also ensure that the events are as comfortable and as intimate as they can be.
These tastings will encompass a wide range of whisky themes, from the classic ‘Whisky Appreciation’ nights to nights based around specific countries, regions, styles, distilleries and bottlers. Hosted by in-house whisky educator Scott Fitzsimons, we’ll also welcome special guests from all around the country to present in front of you.
This does not mean the end of our successful virtual tastings, however. With international travel still uncertain, we’ll be calling upon international guests to join us in a virtual capacity. In these cases we’ll make up tasting kits, which can either be sent around Australia or picked up and enjoyed in store with us in front of the big screen.
We look forward to a big year of sharing great drams through 2021, the 65th anniversary of The Oak Barrel.
