A wonderous and still-fresh 36-year-old single cask Miltonduff, bottled by Scottish indie North Star.
Owned by Chivas Brothers, Miltonduff is a big part of the Ballantine’s blend – one of the biggest selling Scotch whiskies in the world.
The distillery stills are quite large with sharply descending lyne arms – this results in minimal reflux and copper contact to keep the spirit thick and oily.
Rarely seen as an official single malt (there have been distillery door exclusives), Miltonduff is an often-overlooked distillery.
This was distilled November 1981 and bottled September 2018 from a refill hogshead.
At 53.7% just 176 bottles are available worldwide.
Despite its age, this expression is still fresh and fragrant, decades in the barrel allowing tropical fruits to come to the fore.
North Star is Glasgow-based independent bottler run by Iain Croucher. They’re quickly become one of the most exciting and respected bottlers in Scotland.
Official tasting notes:
Nose: Orange opal fruits and burning diesel at the fun fair.
Palate: Grassy dried mango, cinnamon sticks.
Finish: Peach fuzz and apple honey jazz!
