A sherry cask matured Bunnahabhain bottled by North Star as part of Series 12.
Islay's Bunnahabhain produces a majority of un-peated spirit while somewhere around 25% of their whisky produced in modern times is peated. Producing a whisky that is full-flavoured but on the lighter side and quite malleable, it's often seen in ex-sherry casks which help provide a richness and the house ginger note.
This was distilled March 2009 and bottled from a first-fill oloroso sherry butt in October 2020.
Bottled at 52.3% with 630 bottles in the run.
Nose: Gimgerbread men with raisins as buttons and some vanilla icing as hair.
Palate: Instant smooth sherry - treacle and tablet from a wooden spoon.
Finish: Very long, lingers into tunnocks chocolate caramel wafer biscuits dunked into your coffee.
North Star have quickly become one of The Oak Barrel's favourite independent bottlers. Exceptional cask selections at very reasonable prices, they are exciting, fun whiskies - even when they're very serious - which are designed to be drunk and shared.
