A unique and exceptional peated single cask whisky from France’s Michel Couvreur bottled by our friends at Barrel & Batch.
Michel Couvreur source whisky from undisclosed Scottish distilleries and mature them in their Burgundian caves, often in sherry casks.
This whisky, created especially for Barrel & Batch, was inspired by the peated Candid release. A single cask version at 58%, they considered this to be the ‘Big Brother’ or ‘Grand Frere’ of Candid.
A 13-year-old from an Islay distillery, it was matured in a first fill oloroso sherry butt from Equipo Navazos.
“Other than the Islay Region, we don't know where the distillate for Michel Couvreur Grand Frère comes from and [MC manager] Jean Arnaud would never tell us. But some rumours of spirit shipments and old friendships did point to a distillery we'd... beg you all to find. We think the rumours might be right, or we might be wrong, but we'd love to hear what you think.”
Oak Barrel comment:
A whisky of weight and power, the intense sherry maturation gives the smoke a brooding quality. I can see cold nights on the horizon.
Official tasting notes:
“This whisky is everything that a Christmas whisky should be. Ruby red like Santa's nose after all of those free drinks, pipe smoke balanced with dark fruits from the Oloroso cask and at 58% ABV it has the richness of Christmas cake.”
Barrel & Batch is an Australia whisky co-op that sources single cask and rare whiskies from all over the country including Scotland, American and Australia. The limited release whiskies are offered to members of the co-op, but here at The Oak Barrel we’re lucky enough to get our hands on a small number of the odd release.
