Whisky & Spirits Buyer/Educator!

The Oak Barrel is looking for a passionate, driven lover of whisky and spirits to join its expanding team.

This is a senior, full-time position within the company and is a rare opportunity to join one of Australia’s most respected and well-known whisky retail operations. You’ll bring your own skills but also learn from existing staff and 65 years of Oak Barrel experience.

The role will include responsibilities across all spirits; a strong focus on whisky but also involving whisky, gin, tequila/mezcal, rum and other categories.

As well as purchasing duties across the department, you will be responsible for serving customers, managing e-commerce and hosting events.

Overview Of Duties

  • Purchasing and processing whisky and spirits products to stock in the Oak Barrel. This includes staple core-line products as well as sourcing new, rare and exciting products, whilst working within strict monthly budgets.
  • Processing and merchandising products, from receiving deliveries to invoice management and in-store display.
  • E-commerce duties include creation of spirit products for the website and associated tasks including taking images, writing descriptions and tasting notes and ongoing e-commerce management.
  • Serving customers in-store as one of The Oak Barrel’s Whisky & Spirits Educators with expertise in the spirits department, but also across wine and craft beer.
  • Hosting and facilitating of events, both in-person and virtual. Involves the planning and execution of ticket sales, marketing and events as well as hosting duties.
  • Responsibilities for organisation and execution of flagship annual event Sydney Whisky Fair and Sydney Whisky Forum.

The Successful Candidate Will

  • Have an valid RSA certificate.
  • Be able to work independently and within a small team.
  • Have excellent customer service skills, be reliable, diligent and professional.
  • Be able to stick to and manage a strict budget.
  • Possess the ability to grow with the business.
  • Pay rates in accordance with the General Retail Award.

Wine Buyer Role!

The Oak Barrel is looking for a lover of great wine to help shape the future of the wine division. 

A Retail Liquor Store Assistant with senior management responsibilities for wine, in particular Australian wine, including buying, stock management, e-commerce and event hosting. 

The role will include but is not limited to the following duties

  • Assisting customers in The Oak Barrel’s wine department both in-store and online.
  • Managing the current inventory of wine ranging between 1000-1500 skus.
  • Purchasing the incoming wine inventory for the store and website.
  • Sourcing wine inventory from various sources in Australia and internationally.
  • Working within the department budgets set monthly.
  • Developing strong relationships in the industry.
  • Maintaining and keeping the webstore up to date, this includes current images, tasting notes, and stock levels.
  • Writing and researching original content for the website – tasting notes, articles, offers
  • Hosting in-store and virtual ‘Wine Tasting Masterclasses’.
  • Maintaining the overall appearance of the store e.g., filling shelves, daily cleaning, unpacking boxes
  • Working with our team to process online web orders and have them dispatched in a timely manner

The right candidate should display the following

  • A high level of customer service in a retail setting.
  • Adequate knowledge of both Australian and international wine, across several regions and styles.
  • Overall, a strong passion for fine wine and the wine industry.
  • Experience working with wine in a previous industry e.g., retail, hospitality, distribution.
  • The ability to work autonomously and in a team environment.
  • Experience in back of house stock management is an advantage but not necessary.
  • Experience working with independent wineries and suppliers.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft excel is essential.
  • Strong knowledge of craft spirits and/or craft beer is an advantage but not necessary.
  • A desire to build and grow with the business
  • Knowledge of current market trends is an advantage but not necessary.
