We welcome you to attend this unique tasting of Hewitson wines with some of the oldest known plantings on earth. The tasting will feature bottles from Dean Hewitson’s early vintages with the Hewitson L'Oizeau Shiraz 2001 to the latest vintages of his Icon range with the Mad Hatter McLaren Vale Shiraz, The Old Garden Mourvedre and the top of range Barrel 1853.

The Mad Hatter Shiraz is sourced from Carrot Patch Single Vineyard in the Barossa Valley. We will taste earlier vintages of this wine from Blewitt Springs in the northern region of McLaren Vale. This area has some of the oldest vines, the percentage of rainfall tends to be higher and temperatures slightly cooler (due to higher elevation), the soil is usually sand over clay producing some of the best fruit in the area.

Shiraz from this cooler sub-region exhibits defined ripe raspberry characters. McLaren Vale Shiraz is renowned for its great softness and rolling palate. We will compare the older vintages with the current release from the Barossa Valley.

The Old Garden Mourvedre is produced from an ancient vineyard of Mourvedre planted in 1853 by Friedrich Koch. Eight rows of this rare and unique dry planting, the oldest surviving Mourvedre vines in the world, were planted in pre-Phylloxera days with roots now decending an estimated 10 metres into limestone. With such a limited source, these wines have to be of Iconic standing and unbelievable value. We will taste several of the ilder vintages as well as the current release.

Lastly, the Private Cellar wines of the 2000’s. These wines were created in very limited quantities to be sold only at the cellar door. We managed to get an allocation of each vintage including the 2006 Tempranillo until the next vintage became more widely available.

The Shiraz Mourvedre was a blend of the best barrel old vine shiraz together with the Old Garden Mourvedre.

This range has now been replaced by the Barrel 1853 which we will taste on the night. This wine now takes the Hewitson prestige range to another level.
