A big, bruising muscat-cask whisky from the Heartwood team, distilled at Hobart's Lark Distilery.Â
Cask LD961 was filled November 2013 and bottled March 2019 at 58.9%. The Australian muscat cask yielded 334 bottles.
Australia's best known independent bottler Heartwood is run out of Hobart by Tim Duckett. Traditionally focused on Tasmanian whiskies, their second label - the approachable Tasmanian Independent Bottlers - has also sourced new make from mainland distilleries.
Whatever the source, Heartwood are known for being brilliantly unrelenting.
In Tim's own words for this release,"A well known English whisky journo once said of Heartwood 'You either love it or you hate it but you will never forget it'. The catalyst for the establishment of Tasmanian Independent Bottlers (TIB). TIB aims to produce a whisky that is easy to drink, at lower ABV, and has an appeal to a broader spectrum of palates.
"TIB has had recent success (gold medals for every entry) with the International Bottlers Challenge and the Wizards of Whisky Awards with our Australian muscat casks. (Described as easy drinking, mellow, sweet, appeals to everyone.
"Well enough of that. The mongrel is back.
"Heartwood has released Shot In The Dark, the first muscat cask filled with Lark origin 100% peated new make. It was a bit of a risk as it was (I believe) the first muscat cask filled in Australia (may be wrong) and it is from a muscat barrel."
