After consultation with our favourite Armagnac producer, The Oak Barrel can confirm a virtual tasting with Marc Darroze of the famed Darroze bottler. 


Taking place Wednesday 3 June – the same week Marc was due to visit Australia this year – Marc has selected five of his favourite expressions, include bottles from the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s, to sample. Working with the importers Cerbaco, we’ll be bottling them up into 30ml samples to send out across Australia and them jump on a live stream to share and talk about them.

Darroze is one of Armagnac's most celebrated bottlers, and certainly one of its best. Jean Darroze was a famous chef in the region and his son Francis added to their culinary talents by sourcing single estate Armagnacs from around the region. Francis introduced his own son Marc to the industry and they soon became known as the Armagnac "treasure hunters". Marc, a former President of peak body the Bureau National Interprofessionnel de l'Armagnac, now runs the company himself.

He offers the most diversity of any one house. Barrels are selected based on flavour from across the region and they are bottled at natural cask strength. No water or colouring is added.

Outside of the bigger grower-producer houses, the spirit is distilled by small farm properties around the region. Mobile stills that travel from farm-to-farm are an integral part of Armagnac's history and often farmers would sell off barrels of their own, small production for a bit of quick cash. As it has been put elsewhere, a sick bull, a dying horse or tractor are repaired or replaced by the sale of a barrel.

Darroze's bottlings showcase the uniqueness of each farm and offer fantastic transparency about the grapes used in the production.


Marc Darroze was born on 5 August 1969 in Gascogne and his childhood was shared between the kitchens of the family gourmet restaurant, his mother's pharmacy  and under the benevolent eye of his teacher grandmother, who watched over his studies.

After a classical education, Marc embarked on university studies in oenology and obtained his diploma of oenologist in 1993. Five years of diverse wine maker experiences began in California, Hungary, Languedoc and Bordeaux.

It was in 1998 that Marc joined the family business of distillation and aging of Armagnac and has since sought to strive for and defend authenticity, respect, independence and the pleasures of the spirit.

How The Tasting Will Work

Packs(5x 30ml) will be sold for $100 or $90 for members, including delivery. 

We’ll be sending out those packs from Monday 25 May, to ensure that we can get them everywhere they need to be.

Then on Wednesday 3 June Darroze Armagnac President Marc Darroze will be joined by The Oak Barrel’s Scott Fitzsimons from 7pm at The Oak Barrel to discuss the armagnacs.

That will be live streamed through The Oak Barrel’s Facebook page as we field your comments and questions from around Australia.

That said, the live stream video will be posted after the live event concludes - so you can do the tasting at your leisure.
