‘‘Burgundy was the winiest wine, the central, essential, and typical wine, the soul and greatest common measure of all the kindly wines of the earth.’’ – Charles Edward Montague
The region of Burgundy is one of, if not, the most highly renowned wine producing areas on the planet. Few other regions can create wines that compete with the quality, variety, and purity of Burgundy, vintage upon vintage. It is for this reason that many avid wine enthusiast dedicate their entire lives to collecting and enjoying the wines of Burgundy.
Focusing almost entirely on the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the growing area of Burgundy runs from the mostly northerly town of Auxerre, where nearby Chablis calls home, 40 kilometres where lies the most southerly area of Macon and at most points, Burgundy is only 2kms wide. Despite being a much smaller region than many other famous winemaking areas, the terroir of Burgundy changes drastically among subregion and greatly affects the style of wine produced. Burgundy is home to many of the world’s most famous wines passionately sought after across the world. For example a current vintage from Domaine de la Romanee Conti’s most famous vineyard ‘Romanee Conti’ will set a Burgundy lover back a cool $25,000.
Jean-Claude Rateau is one of the most established winegrowers and makers in all of Burgundy. He has an unrivalled understanding for the soil and terroir of his Burgundy vineyards, tending to them all by hand in order to grow the healthiest fruit possible. He first began exploring biodynamics in the 1970’s, and began wine growing 100% biodynamically in 1979, giving him the title of the first biodynamic winegrower in all of Burgundy!
His part of the walled vineyard “Clos des Mariages” is the first and therefore oldest biodynamic parcel of vines in all of the Cote d’Or.
The wines of Jean-Claude Rateau are stunningly pure, reaching flavours that can only be achieved by passionate viticulture and high-quality winemaking.
On Tuesday 13th of August we welcome Jean-Claude Rateau to the Oak Barrel Tasting Room to take us through his incredible range of Burgundy wines which grace our shores in miniscule amounts, and offer an in-depth winemaker discussion about this incredible region.
