Our next tasting with our friends from That Boutique-y Whisky Company is going to be something very special as we launch the inaugural Australian series – eight whiskies sourced from eight different Aussie distilleries and bottled by this eclectic indie bottler.
In what will be a fascinating exploration in tasting Aussie whiskies through the prism of Scottish taste buds, we’ll be opening all eight of these expressions and hosting it both in-store and virtually, streamed all across Australia.
One of Scotland’s most prolific independent bottlers, Boutique-y share an ethos with The Oak Barrel that whisky is meant to be drunk, whisky is meant to be fun. Known for their bright labels and excellent juice, they have bottled most distilleries in Scotland and are increasingly expanding to include whiskies from around the world – which is where this series of Australian whiskies fits in.
Their limited-edition labels are designed by Emily Chappell and reference interesting elements (or in-jokes) about the distillery. Their batches, which can be single casks or married from a number of casks, are bottled at the strength they deem the whisky is most enjoyable at.
The Australian series features a range of styles, a bright and bold wine cask from Starward, a farmyard rye from Belgrove, a sweet and creamy Killara and a beautifully peated Bakery Hill, a floral and bright Tin Shed (Iniquity), a raw and smoky Riverbourne and an industrial Black Gate.
One of our picks (and not just because it has a steam train on the label) is the sherry-heavy Fleurieu, which is an exclusive to The Oak Barrel in Australia.
This event will be run in-store, with a capacity of 20 people, and online - with 15ml samples sent out across Australia. Please select which option you would like, as these are not transferable. That is, if you select the online option the samples will be sent to you and you will not be able to join us in the room due to capacity constraints.
For those participating online, links to watch and join the event will be sent out the morning of the event - so they're top of your inbox!
Virtual packs will be be sent out from Wednesday 14 April.

THE OAK BARREL’S 2021 WHISKY TASTING SEASON
In 2021 The Oak Barrel will once again host a series of intimate, enjoyable and wide-ranging whisky tastings, but now they’ll be over a few different formats.
Our in-person tastings will return to our Cellar Room, which will now be capped to 20. This will not only ensure the safety of customers and staff, but also ensure that the events are as comfortable and as intimate as they can be.
These tastings will encompass a wide range of whisky themes, from the classic ‘Whisky Appreciation’ nights to nights based around specific countries, regions, styles, distilleries and bottlers. Hosted by in-house whisky educator Scott Fitzsimons, we’ll also welcome special guests from all around the country to present in front of you.
This does not mean the end of our successful virtual tastings, however. With international travel still uncertain, we’ll be calling upon international guests to join us in a virtual capacity. In these cases we’ll make up tasting kits, which can either be sent around Australia or picked up and enjoyed in store with us in front of the big screen.
We look forward to a big year of sharing great drams through 2021, the 65th anniversary of The Oak Barrel.
