A 17-year-old Glentauchers bottled by That Boutique-y Whisky Co.
This 17-year-old is Batch 5 from the indie bottlers, bottled at 53%.
Glentauchers is rarely seen as a single malt and has played a part in major blends including Black & White, Chivas Regal and Ballentine's. It was mothballed for seven years from 1985 to 1992 and it is now Pernod Ricard's 'Centre Of Excellence'. Their only fully manual operated distillery, Glentauchers serves as their training ground for staff from across the business.
Despite the ABV this is a gentle whisky, a floral nose of fresh fruit and honey. That carries through onto the palate, where there's a touch of oak and a hint of warm spice. Finish is textural and fresh.
From the bottlers:
"How times have changed. Glentauchers like to keep things very traditional, not using computers to make their whisky. However, back in the day, the Glentauchers distillery was interested in experimenting in new ways to distill malt whiskies, which led to their foray into ‘silent malt’ (the process of making malt whisky in column stills).
"This trend happily didn't catch on and pot stills are used to this day by Scotch whisky distilleries to make their malt whisky. As you can see from our label, showing the exact moment Glentauchers decided to try out ‘silent malt’ production, obscene amounts of facial hair was popular back then too. Some things never change."
