An 21-year-old Benrinnes bottled by That Boutique-y Whisky Company, exclusive to The Oak Barrel in Australia.
Bottled at 47.1%, there were 414 bottles in Batch 14.
Benrinnes is one of Diageo's workhorse distilleries, producing spirit for blends rather than single malts. The distillery utilises worm tub condensers and employs wide spirit cuts to produce a meaty, slightly sulphury spirit.
They also employ wide spirit cuts to promote a full-bodied spirit.
A real gem with the indies and this expression in particular is a great example of the distillery - it's all about the texture and weight on the palate.
On the label from Boutique-y:
"The label features cartoon characters Pete McPeat and Jack Washback, both used to appear from time to time in Serge Valentin’s blog Whisky Fun (whiskyfun.com). We’ve got them in the classroom having a one-sided conversation about the partial triple distillation process that was used at Benrinnes up until 2007/2008. There’s a confusing diagram on the blackboard which might not be helping!"
Nose: Shy and dry, and needs to be wakened up to tease out notes of malted malt biscuits, liquorice, star anise, and oak.
Palate: Medium sweet on the palate, this is big and bold. Malty oak, and little overripe orchard fruit. Hints of honey, vanilla pod and clove. It
definitely has a wow factor.
Finish: That wow factor lingers long, leaving a spicy prickle at the end.
