When you grow up drinking only the best ciders made in the traditional English way, and to your dismay your now adopted home of Australia does things their own way, you find a way to bring a little bit of home to your palate. Enter Small Acres Cyder, a literal mum and pop operation hailing from the Central West of New South Wales, where James and Gail Kendall have been making their versions of traditional, English ciders since 2007. Along the way the Kendall’s have managed to pick up some amazing accolades with winning both Australia’s Best Cider and Best Perry awards over multiple years. With an expansive range factoring in non-alcoholic, still, sparkling perry and even ice ciders. Let’s take a journey through their orchard of flavour!

The pomme is an incredibly fruit-forward, medium-dry cider that presents an amazingly fresh and vibrant apple characteristic. Fruit for this is fresh pressed cider apples from Orange and damn this is a great summer smasher.

The Somerset Still is an incredible homage to the western areas of England, where traditionally their ciders are still, boozy and have an incredible amount of intensity of flavour. Small Acres creates their representation out of 100% cider apples, presenting earthy apple flavours with a crisp, dry finish that is best served chilled and goes down a treat with cheese, terrines and slow braised pork.

Slightly sparkling, and reminiscent of the styles of cider coming from Brittany in France, the Appscato (presumably an incredible mash-up of apple and Moscato) this release from Small acres is displaying a great balance of intense, fruit-forward flavours with hints of apple blossom and aromas of walking through an orchard are off-set with an incredibly clean finish. Rethink your mimosa game at brunch and jump onto this number.

Perry, surname of a famous chef and also the guy who played Chandler in Friends, but when we are talking tasty, fizzy fermented-y goodness, we are talking about a cider made from 100% pears. Small Acres take an even more traditional route by bottle fermenting their Perry, allowing for a natural and individual fermentation to occur that will leave a little sediment behind, showing that the yeast has done its job making this a crisp finishing Perry that will best served literally any time you want celebrate a little.

Since taking out Australian Champion Cider in 2011, the Cat’s Pyjamas is only a release seen when the apples are presenting the best flavours. This has been made from apples that are 100% estate grown by the Kendall’s and sees a rapid departure from their usual production methods. Taking some cues from the realm of champagne, we see 100% cider apples being fermented on solids, being taken through the journey of malolactic fermentation, spending a solid 24 months on its lees. Each individual bottle is riddled and disgorged by hand. When you talk about the pinnacle of hand-crafted, premium, mind-altering incredible cider, this is where you NEED to be looking.
