A very special single cask from Belgrove that has a unique link to a famous modern Australian whisky.
This 100 percent rye whisky was matured in the cask that previous held Heartwood’s Release The Beast single malt, a whisky that many consider to be one of the best Australian whiskies released in the past decade. This was the ex-sherry marrying cask that held the Lark spirit for Tim Duckett’s independent bottling line, Heartwood.
A very different beast given that this is a rye whisky, the cask has still had plenty to say.
Rich spices of ginger and nutmeg, with a nice citrus edge and a moreish chocolatey edge. One of the best limited release Belgroves we’ve seen through the Oak Barrel in recent years, for ours.
Lucky enough to try last year, very limited quantity has just arrived on the mainland.
340 bottles total at 65.3%.
Located about an hour north of Hobart, Belgrove's Peter Bignell grows all his own rye. He built his own still, which is direct-fired by bio-diesel. Belgrove is unique distillery for both Australia and the world and is probably the greenest distillery in the world.
