A limited, unusual release from Tasmania's Belgove distillery is a hopped malt expression from the usually rye-focused site.
Floral and fruity on the nose, you need to approach this with an open mind as it doesn't have the same rye spice that usually comes out of a Belgrove-shaped bottle.
Hopes are notoriously challenging through distillation, but Peter Bignell has managed them expertly here. There's minimal bitterness that you'd expect, the hops instead coming across as that floral element amongst the fruit.
Pleasingly long finish, as well.
Located about an hour north of Hobart, Belgrove's Peter Bignell grows all his own rye. He built his own still, which is direct-fired by bio-diesel. Belgrove is unique distillery for both Australia and the world and is probably the greenest distillery in the world.
