In what may be one of our favourite exclusive bottlings to date, The Oak Barrel is excited to announced that we've been lucky enough to be offered a single cask from the Ardnamurchan distillery in Scotland.

Amongst the first single cask releases offered anywhere in the world, and certainly down under, the bottling is to celebrate our relationship with Adelphi/Ardnamurchan and the 65th anniversary of The Oak Barrel.

Due to land for Sydney Whisky Fair & Forum 2021, the bottling was debuted via a 'secret seventh dram' in our Thursday 6 May 2021 Adelphi tasting (held both in-store and virtually).

Chosen in the collaboration with the team at Ardnamurchan, 07:15 CK384 is a five-year-old peated expression matured in an American oak barrel.

Distilled 2015 and bottled 2021 from cask #384, the cask yielded 266 bottles at 59.1%. It is un-chill filtered and natural colour.

Oak Barrel tasting notes:

Nose: Sweet malt. Upstream barbecue. Crushed rock. Last nights embers and roasted grain. Vanilla and dried leaves. Fresh jelly.

Palate: Rounded. Textural. Real experience. Bright smoke and crushed chilli flakes.

Finish: Good length, coal fire, gravel. Slight salinity.

Where The Cask Came From

Speaking at the launch in May Ardnamurchan founder Alex Bruce said, "The excitement is mutual. We are honoured to be able to supply one of the first single casks from our own distillery to you guys in The Oak Barrel.

“The great thing is, just like with Adelphi having to be a much more virtual company in the past year in terms of tastings, cask selection and all the rest of it, we have the whole bottling scenario worked out. We have our maturing stock at the distillery and down here in Fife we have a rolling stock of mature Ardnamurchan and from that we can pick the next batch of the single malt – and I just keep it topped up. So at any given time I have about 400 Ardnamurchan single casks, literally ten metres from where I'm sitting and wafting through the office door.

“When we go about a batch of the single malt, we're obviously looking for some consistency where as a panel we're nosing each of the casks, to see how they've matured, we're selecting the batch. Every now and then through that selection process there'll be a cask that jumps out.

“There's nothing to stop us putting it in a batch, but it's also going to be very exception as a single cask - and this is one of those.

"It's from our first run of peated spirit at the distillery, we started using peated malt in 2015 about six months after we started production... It's very similar to the one in the [first release] tasting pack in terms of the cask number and where it was maturing in the distillery.

“If you don't know, we have our original maturation warehouse and we have several new ones. The original one was built on two levels, the first of those being virtually underground, built into the hillside, and it retains its temperature and humidity pretty much year-round. That's perfect for long-term maturation.

“Then we have an upper level in that warehouse that's concrete floor and very close to the roof so we get much more fluctuation in temperature and a much drier atmosphere. That promotes quicker maturation and, sadly, loss of volume. But what we found up there was massive consistency in our 2015s and, in particular, these peated, American oak barrels.”

Sales Manager Connal Mackenzie added, "The cask that we chose for the tasting pack was cask #371, so this might have even been [filled] the same day as #384. I'm just so chuffed that you decided to bottle this to celebrate 65 years and such a close relationship we have with the team at Oak Barrel, it's just a privilege to bring that to you."

Ardnamurchan

Founded in 2014 by Alex Bruce and the team behind independent bottlers Adelphi, Ardnamurchan produce both peated and unpeated spirit. One of the greenest distilleries in Scotland, they've embraced blockchain technology for transparency on every bottle and produce a stunning whisky that is very much a product of its environment.

After a number of 'spirit' progress reports, they released their first whisky in 2020.

Speaking with The Oak Barrel as part of Sydney Whisky Forum 2020, Bruce said:

"We chose Ardnamurchan, this remote, rugged, highland, west coastal peninsula, we chose it to build a distillery, not because it would be impossible to get to and all that sort of stuff, but most importantly we chose it because of the climate and what it is and what it can do to whisky.

"We’ve built a distillery, we’re trying to make the best possible spirit that we can but everything else we’re handing over to the environment. If I was to copy and paste Ardnamurchan somewhere else in Scotland or somewhere else in the world, you would get a very different whisky. The profile that we are naturally getting out there is a very maritime, very coastal profile."
