2021 is a special year for The Oak Barrel, one of the oldest independent bottle stores in Australia. Founded 1956, we celebrate our 65th anniversary – the Blue Sapphire milestone by some reckonings.

In the past 65 years The Oak Barrel sourced our favourite bottles from Australia and the world, wines, spirits and beers, sharing them with customers

Throughout the year we’ll continue to celebrate the finest Australia and the world has to offer, with 65 selections from our wine, spirits and beer experts – one for each year of existence.

They may be new releases, personal favourites, exclusives or purely exceptional drops. As we reveal them, we’ll list them below – with a quick line from the staff member who chose them.

For those of you who like a party – don’t fret – we’ll also be marking the celebrations with events later in the year, which are to be announced.

Whisky, February 2021

"We're lucky enough to be living through the Irish whiskey renaissance and this is a single pot still dram that is both traditional and progressive. Very, very tasting and the first whisky from this region for over a century." - Scott Fitzsimons

Wine, January 2021

"A regular at any party attended to be the Oak Barrel employees, James Erskine's full carbonic Shiraz is always bursting with life. Full of fresh red berries and sweet spices, it's zippy acidity makes it incredibly drinkable whilst maintaining it's structure and dry finish delivering the elegance and complexity we know and love about the Jauma wines." - Joe Perry

4. JAMES EADIE BENRINNES 11-YEAR-OLD

Whisky, January 2021

"One of our favourite distilleries through an indie bottler new to Australia, thanks to our friends at Whisky & Alement. We don't like judging by colour... but look at it! Bloody good drop, too." - Scott Fitzsimons

3. HERETIC TORMENT BELGIAN STRONG ALE

"We named BenRiach Cask Strength Batch 2 our 2020 Whisky of the Year, but with it all sold out we worked with the distillery to offer their veritable 10-year-old at $65 for member. Excellent value for an excellent whisky." - Scott Fitzsimons

1. BOUTIQUE-Y ARDBEG 13-YEAR-OLD
