“Girvan is massive. 115 mill litres annually made up of mainly wheat with a touch of barley. It’s owner, Wm Grant & Sons mainly use it for blends, such as the ubiquitous Grants. While most of the spirit used from the distillery is relatively young, blenders such as Grants also like to keep some in oak for up to a very long time. And these drams are not only highly tasty, aromatic and very complex, and are generally are generally very well priced. Sadly, malt drinkers prize well-aged single malts over aged grain spirit. The Cadenhead’s Original Collection is a newer range from the Cadenhead’s shop, aimed at the export market. If every Cadenhead release was released in their own shops in the UK, then none would be left for the rest of the world! To satiate this growing global demand, The Original Collection was born. Excellent releases, at 46%, usually from larger casks (hogsheads, hurrah!), with that everlasting Cadenhead’s quality.
Cadenhead is Scotland’s oldest independent bottler, having being founded in 1842 as William Cadenhead Limited Wine & Spirit Merchants. It was family owned until it was bought by another family company J&A Mitchell & Co, owners of the Springbank and Glengyle distilleries.
